Wabi: A Hero's Tale by Joseph Bruchac 198 p.

A young white great horned owl, Wabi, is pushed out of his nest and taken under the wing of his grandmother owl, who, like him, can understand and speak the language of humans and other animals. Wabi grows up fascinated by the nearby Abenaki Indians. He falls in love with an Abenaki girl, Dojihla, and eventually shapeshifts into a young man, winning the girl's heart, and saving her people from harm.
