Rules by Cynthia Lord 200 p.

Twelve-year old Catherine is self-conscious and embarrassed by her unpredictable autistic younger brother, David. One way Catherine copes is through her art, and in the back of her sketch book, she makes up rules for David to follow if he should ever wake up and become "normal." While waiting for David at his therapy sessions, Catherine becomes friends with a boy who is a paraplegic and communicates using picture cards. She volunteers to make him some new ones and eventually comes to see that there is no such thing as "normal."
